Experiences

Henri Willig likes to let its visitors leave richer than when they came. We do this at various locations and in various ways. In Edam, for instance, we have a museum about Edam cheese, various cheese tastings and a small museum in Amsterdam. In addition, there are various experiences at the various farms. We are regularly looking for host and hostess colleagues who are flexibly available and enjoy using storytelling to convey the unique story of Henri Willig in general and of the location itself in particular to groups and individual guests. They also welcome guests and show them around the venue.

Jacobs Hoeve Cheese Farm and Organic Jersey Farm

Katwoude is located on the IJsselmeerdijk between Monnickendam and Volendam. The rural setting with farms is typical of the North Holland polder, the breeding ground of the famous Dutch cheeses. At the bottom of the dike is the atmospheric Jacobs Hoeve. Upon arrival, our staff in original costume show you how cheese is made. The cosy shop offers a wide selection of exclusive Henri Willig cheese, souvenirs and typical Dutch delicacies. Since 2018, there is also the possibility to visit Henri Willig's organic Jersey farm. Through a self-guided tour, you will also learn something from it.

The Cheese Watch

In days gone by, the 'Edammertjes' were weighed in the Kaaswaag, in the historic centre of Edam. A visit to the Kaaswaag and the summer cheese market will take you back to the origins of the world-famous round cheeses. The most visited cheese market in the Netherlands is Edam's. In July and August, there are folklore demonstrations every Wednesday. These involve cheese carriers demonstrating how the heavy round Edam cheeses are transported on berries, exactly as it used to be done. This takes place on the square in front of the Kaaswaag, which dates back to 1778 and where cheese was weighed. The Cheese Weighing House houses a permanent exhibition on the art of cheese making. Of course, you can also taste and buy cheese here.
