On Safari along Waterland apprenticeships

12 feb 2024

The safari was organised by the Hospitality Sector Table. This unites business, education and municipalities in Zaanstreek-Waterland to work on, among other things, a better connection between education and the labour market. Participants could choose from the International safari, food and cuisine, the hospitality tour (front office and service) and the orientation tour. This took them, with an enthusiastic reception, to four of the following companies: Jo&Co, Theatre de Purmaryn, De Stallen and Brasa in Purmerend, Brasserie de Taanketel and Restaurant Land&Zeezicht on Marken, Fort Resort Beemster, Zaans Museum, Henri Willig in Katwoude, Europarcs Poort van Amsterdam in Uitdam.

At 9am, group A stepped in for Horizon College, with students from Gerrit Rietveld. The afternoon was destined for locations in Marken but now they set off first for Fort Resort Beemster. A good start, because that is exactly the kind of company many young people have never been to and which guarantees a big 'wow' factor. General manager Eveline Colijn personally gave them a comprehensive tour of all the wellness facilities, the kitchen and the two restaurants, which in total welcome around 400 guests a day.

The next stop was the restaurant Jo&Co on the Koemarkt in Purmerend where they were enthusiastically welcomed by manager Joep. He told them about how small Jo&Co started 25 years ago and gradually grew bigger and bigger. What it's like for young people who come to work there and how they get there on a growth path. Starting at a young age with the dishes to finally join a 'neighbourhood'.

Meanwhile, another group had arrived at Theatre De Purmaryn: hospitality students from Horizon College. All neatly dressed in costume, they listened with interest to manager Melanie de Kwant, who enthusiastically explained to them what it's like in a theatre café/restaurant. Where the ten minutes in the performance breaks are really top sport, where there are sometimes 500 people on an evening who have to be catered for, and where, of course, many Dutch celebrities stop by the theatre.

The safari certainly helped participants broaden their outlook. "Fort Resort was so beautiful, we had never been there before, that would be nice for a second internship," Noëlle and Manouk from Horizon College told us. "And it is also nice if there is a story behind something, especially if the person telling it is enthusiastic and hospitable, then they already have an edge with us. We're glad we did this!"
